Now based in the West Midlands, Madi Stimpson is an exciting and eclectic guitarist, composer, singer and songwriter.
Versed in a range of styles but with a definite emphasis on manouche (gypsy swing), bebop, ragtime, country picking and bluegrass, his set combines original, contemporary and traditional material. Included are Madi’s arrangements of tunes by sax virtuoso Charlie Parker, gypsy guitar genius Django Reinhardt, country guitar masters Jerry Reed and Chet Atkins, Bach, Scott Joplin, Mozart and a selection of British and Irish tunes.
Given his first guitar at the age of 13, Madi really began to learn his trade when at the age of 18 he set off on his travels around mainland Europe and Ireland. Never formally tutored, he learned by jamming with the local musicians he met and stayed with and by busking and picking up small gigs in pubs and cafes. Now regularly seen performing throughout the Midlands and Welsh borders, Madi should not be missed.
He will be performing at the Porthcawl Jazz Festival with fellow guitarist Vo Fletcher and double bassist Paul Smith. Vo regularly plays with Fairport Convention fiddler Ric Sanders and Paul is often involved with Worcester’s Journeyman, Trio Rosbifs and Flat World.
